What Was I Thinking

Do you ever wonder what the hell you were thinking when you chose your career path? Advertising.....it sounded so interesting and fun when I was in college, like something you only see people in movies doing. Well it's not like a movie and it's not that interesting. I don't even do anything cool like write copy or create elaborate illustrations. I spend my days taking orders for imagery as if I were running the McDonald's drive through (would you like fries with that image of a cheesburger) and chasing people down to get updates on the status of jobs. I hate it when I catch myself using those, all too familiar, buzz words like "touch base" and "circle back". But sometimes, like that little ball of spit that comes flying out of your mouth when you are talking to someone, it just comes out before I can stop myself. Sometimes during long drawn out meetings I find myself thinking about people like that guy from "Escape from Chimp Eden". I may watch too much Animal Planet, but I think to myself.....this guy is out risking his life and rescuing chimps and teaching them how to live in the wild and I'm sitting here trying to figure out what team to give the next print ad assignment too. Don't get me wrong......I actually really like my job most of the time. Most of the people I work with are great and it actually can be pretty fun. But sometimes I just think..........................there's got to be more to life.
